A foundation runs on people who want to make a difference for others and for society. Lente, secretary of Stichting Mwanzo, is one of those people. She's happy to share who she is and why she took on this role.
A teacher through and through — that's how I'd describe myself. My name is Lente and I thoroughly enjoy teaching Year 2. In my free time I love being with friends, playing a board game, reading or taking a walk to the beach. I do a lot of sport, and there's nothing quite like a run through the dunes.
A while back I travelled to Kenya with my two best friends. Of course to see the beautiful wildlife and nature, but also with a purpose. On our very first day we visited The Ark in Kenya. The year before, I had helped raise a good amount of money at my school by organising a sponsored run. It was really special to see where that money had gone. I was moved to see how Caroline and her team provide a loving home for children. Playing together with the children and experiencing how happy they were that we took the time to be with them — that stayed with me.
Being secretary of this foundation is deeply rewarding volunteer work. I help write the newsletter and think every month about how to bring a piece of The Ark to life in it, so that you get to know The Ark a little better each time. For this I stay in close contact with The Ark's staff. Together with the other board members I work to keep our goals clear and bring structure to our tasks. I enjoy coordinating and I enjoy creating — so those are things I'm happy to take on. But perhaps what I love most is telling others about The Ark and about Mwanzo. I like to share my enthusiasm and passion so that together we can care for this wonderful organisation. Because I believe people will contribute when they know the story — and this story is worth telling!
